09 | I NEED Pandemic in Space! 🌟

First of all - Eid Mubarak for all my Muslim friends reading this! Wishing you a joyous Hari Raya celebration with family & friends 🙏🏻

We’re back with the 2nd Devlog of the year. This time I’m sharing some new info about the game content - a first look at one of the core exploration mechanics; Planet Rekindling, the universe lore & the freshly designed Antagonists of the game! Hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did making them!


As mentioned in the video - the idea for I NEED SPACE sprouted when we had to isolate ourselves during the recent global pandemic. The experience from that event inspired the question - "what if the pandemic happens on a universal scale?"

You know, as much as the Pandemic hurt at the time - I was actually grateful too, because I got to spend a lot more time with my loved ones and especially my 2 boys Poki & Soba, who are the main inspirations for Nebula in the game.

They both have really bushy curly tails irl!

Puzzles like one where you have to set a blockage in the Moon was a direct experience of me trying to outsmart my boys as I’m trying to bathe them on a Sunday afternoon 😅 It’s little things like that - but perhaps pet parents can somewhat relate ~


The game takes place in the Solfège Galaxy, a star system that has been swept by a mysterious pandemic. Everything was engulfed in a destructive Haze that rendered most O2-producing flora to be extinct, and the mass population desperate to survive.


The game universe is made up of 7 playable Sectors, each with its own biomes, hazards, flora, fauna, unique gameplay mechanics, bosses & most importantly - themes.


Though I will not be going much into the themes of each Sector at this time - I just want to emphasize that these thematic values are what significantly drove the design, for example, the first Sector is built upon the theme of Curiosity - which is highly fitting for the first introductory hours of the game. Oh, and did I mention… cats?

The last Sector is not included in this post, because that’s a huuuuge spoiler - so I’m gonna be hush-hush about that one for now :) (or we just haven’t actually got any image of it just yet).


One of the few survivors of the Pandemic formed an interstellar corporation we refer to as the Apemen, a space-venturing race that has been generationally forced into all kinds of exploitative labor such as planet fracking, slavery, over-mining, and so on due to the scarcity of O2. Basically they’re the main baddies of the game. I have just posted the very first image of them last week on social media - so here’s a majestic yet intimidating (hopefully) mugshot of the Apemen.


In the game, you’ll come across them not only exploiting the few remaining planets, but also trying to capture all the cosmic beings like Nebula, and so this is where the conflict lies between them and Starkid (the protagonist).

The Apemen is led by a Commander, and the followers mine precious resources from all corners of the galaxy, which will be transported & refined in their space factories, all in order to sustain their survival-at-all-cost mentality - Here’s an early look at some of their activities.




However! All hope is not lost! As Starkid and friends are able to revive planets and bring them back from a sad state into a living, breathing ecosystem once again. This revival process is called Planetary Rekindling.


With the help of a horticulturist, Starkid is able to gather space junk and debris to be utilized as fertilizers, which are then used to balance the planetary conditions required in order to commence the Rekindling process. This can only be done by setting up a Greenhouse on dying planets.




Well, it’s been a blast sharing all this new exciting content from the game! It’s quite a long one this time, but there’s plenty more where it came from :)
