Dev Diary #12 - Smokin' Progress

Hello Surface-Dwellers,

We recently posted one of our level early Concept Art The Sunken Kingdom:

Without spoiling too much, this level was design with the theme of claustrophobia, sprinkles of dread and splashes of wonder all around, its guaranteed to blow' you away (literally).

Here's a slice of what it looks like in-game:

One of the main ingredient of this level are the presence of Stoned Faces, here are the early drafts, references & sketches:

The idea is to feel as if you're intruding into a fogged up bar filled with grumpy old geezers having a good ol' smoke, they don't hate you for being there, but to be blunt' they would much prefer you to pass by quietly and not make a fuss, they would nonchalantly blow smokes around you, passed you or at you. These blowing stoned faces plays a big part in serving the level's puzzle design that requires a Hover mechanic, allowing you to ride the smoke currents in order to solve your way pass the area.

Thank you for the kind words! We really appreciate the support! Hope you enjoyed the experience :)

I did. But I haven't tried the game yet.

Wow! I am blown away only reading about it! Amazing as always!

Thank you! This is probably the level that we spent the longest time designing and polishing so far :)

That makes me curious about how many levels the game will be consisted of. I know that on the front page there's 5 concept arts shown from the different levels, does that mean that the levels would be 5? On average how long do you expect the game to take for completion, without secrets and easter eggs?

There are indeed more levels than advertised XD At the moment our targeted regular experience is just under 4-5 hrs without 100% completion, however we're still tweaking some of the difficulties and flow of the game, so that's still subject to change, but it wouldn't stray too far from that estimated number. We are itching to get more content in of course, but we have to restrain ourselves to the budget & time available. Thanks for the question!

That's great to hear. I personally think and always thought that way that a game should really have measured proportions in terms of collectibles and play time. So To me 4-5 hours is a pretty good experience. I think above 8 would feel too demanding for players.

Successful indie games like Journey and Abzu, Vane and others also manage to balance these aspects pretty well, and they usually don't take longer than 5-6 hours. So that's great to hear.
