Dev Diary #31 - Sunken City

"What is the city but the people" - William Shakespeare

Hello folks!

This week we take a peek at one of the final level art within SAMUDRA's journey.

As some of you are already aware - the world's climate is changing and there are many consequences to this issue; like sinking cities.  The town we are currently developing this game from, Jakarta, Indonesia, is the world's fastest sinking city — as fast as 10 centimetres per year. So yeah it is probably not a deadline that we should be worried about - but the fact that we'd have to move our studio onto an ark & prepare our diving helmet or something.

As insanely surreal as this sound - this had been a thorn in all Jakartan's side when we were all growing up; flooding is an annual thing, and as a resident, we kind of ironically just got used to it. Some actions were implemented by the people in charge, but most of these are simply diverting the flood route to other parts of the island, we still have a deeply rooted plumbing issue that is unsolved and dates back to our Dutch colonial era from the 40s, dumpage and blockage problem, island reclamations that disregards rising sea level issues.

The climate is changing, why aren't we?

I love how cleverly almost every single aspect of the game has its real counterpart. The issue in Jakarta is very interesting. I've self educated myself on it some time ago and I just love these references. Speaking of real life easter eggs, the game seems to be full of them! That gives me an idea about a list of achievements on Steam. Probably story-related achievements that everybody will unlock while playing the game could have metaphorical titles hinting towards these real life easter eggs.

Thank you for appreciating and noticing the fine details of our work always JM :D

We have recently listed out and just about to begin implementation of the achievements for each chapter, so feel free to share your suggestions! We are thinking of doing more poll/ suggestion types posts subsequently in the near future too!
